Sugared Strawberries

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • An additional 1/8 – 1/2 cup sugar

Directions

  1. Wash strawberries by spraying thoroughly with cold water*. Shake off excess water.
  2. Cut off the tops (stem and leaves) of strawberries as close to the stem as possible.
  3. Slice strawberries into bite-sized pieces. How you cut them will depend on the size of the strawberries.
  4. Place strawberries in a bowl that has a lid.
  5. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of sugar on top of strawberries. DO NOT STIR.
  6. Put lid on bowl and place in refrigerator.
  7. After 3-4 hours, stir strawberries and sugar. Taste a bit of the juice (the strawberries themselves will not have absorbed the sugar yet).
  8. Add an additional 1/8-1/2 cup of sugar**, if needed – or to taste. Stir well.
  9. Replace lid and place back in refrigerator. Leave overnight (or an additional 6-8 hours – sugar should be entirely dissolved and absorbed).
  10. Enjoy strawberries!

Notes

*This can be done in a strainer or, if the container they come in has holes, you can do it in that.

**RYAN: Be reasonable here. You do not want them to end up so sweet that you no longer taste strawberries.
